Meet Dibia. Agentic Procurement, No Sacrifices Required.

Procurement is suddenly becoming agentic.

Agents that can source. Analyze suppliers. Create purchasing requests. Chase approvals. Monitor risk. Agents that can actually do things, rather than simply answer questions.

And that is exciting.

But at Calabash, we have been thinking about a slightly different question:

What should agentic procurement look like when it is built with Africa in mind?

Our answer has a name.

Dibia.

Dibia, the AI procurement companion from Calabash.

First, about that name

The name comes from West African tradition.

A Dibia is commonly described as a native doctor, medicine person, diviner or healer, although those English translations do not fully capture the traditional concept.

A Dibia traditionally draws upon knowledge and experience to understand a problem and determine what needs to happen next.

Ours does something considerably less supernatural.

And, thankfully:

No chickens. No eggs. No sacrifices required. 😄

The name carries a second reading.

Digital Intelligence for Business Integration and Automation.

Which is, more or less, the job description.

Procurement software has spent decades waiting for us

Open the system. Find the transaction. Complete the form. Enter the supplier. Find the material. Choose the cost center. Submit. Wait. Check again. Call someone. Send an email. Check again.

AI gives us an opportunity to reverse that relationship.

Instead of humans learning how to operate procurement software, procurement software can begin learning how to work with humans.

Agentic procurement is not simply putting a chatbot beside an ERP. The important transition is from AI that can tell you what to do toward AI that can, within appropriate permissions and controls, help execute the work.

A plain language request, and the draft requisition it produced.
A plain language request, and the draft requisition it produced.

Say: "I need 20 laptops for our Lagos office. Get this started."

Dibia should not respond with a 14 field form. It should understand the request, determine what information is missing, apply the organization's policies and permissions, and move the request into the appropriate procurement process.

And when human judgment is required?

Bring in the human.

Agentic should not mean uncontrolled.

But there is another problem

Most companies are not going to throw away their ERP because somebody invented an AI agent.

Nor should they.

There are enormous investments sitting inside SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage, Xero, QuickBooks and Odoo. Those systems hold financial controls, supplier records, purchasing history, approval structures and years, sometimes decades, of business logic.

So we do not think the future requires another massive rip and replace exercise.

Dibia becomes the intelligent layer above the systems organizations already use.

Your ERP stays the system of record. Dibia becomes one of the ways people interact with it.

Your ERP remains the system of record. Dibia becomes one of the ways people interact with it. And where the underlying system does not support a particular procurement process, Dibia provides that capability and passes the resulting transaction downstream.

What a procurement assistant becomes

"Where is my requisition?" Dibia finds it.

"Which purchase orders are waiting for me?" Dibia surfaces them.

"Which suppliers are becoming risky?" Dibia brings together the signals worth investigating.

"What changed in my supply base this week?" Dibia flags the disruptions that touch your suppliers and your open orders.

"I need 20 laptops for the Lagos office." Dibia drafts the requisition, coded and ready for review.

"Approve this." If you are authorized, the action can be executed within the appropriate controls.

"The goods arrived." Dibia can help record the receipt.

Requisitions, goods receipt and purchase orders, inside Dibia.

The path from assistant to copilot to agent is evolutionary rather than a completely new product.

Why build this from Africa

Because Africa should not simply be a market where the next generation of enterprise technology gets sold. We should be building some of it.

African procurement has its own realities. Different payment infrastructure, different supplier ecosystems, different levels of ERP maturity. Cross border purchasing. Currency complexity. Informal and formal suppliers side by side. Businesses running sophisticated ERPs alongside processes still coordinated through email, spreadsheets, phone calls and messaging.

Those are not reasons Africa has to wait for agentic procurement. They are reasons to rethink how procurement technology should work here.

And this is not about building an African alternative that isolates African companies from global technology. Dibia sits between the way African businesses actually operate and the enterprise systems they already depend upon.

The interface to procurement may be changing

For decades, enterprise software has largely been organized around screens, menus, transactions and forms.

Agentic systems introduce another possibility.

Intent becomes the interface.

Tell the system what you need. Let technology orchestrate the routine work. Keep humans in control of the decisions that matter.

We think Africa should participate in building that future, not simply consuming it.

So yes. We named ours Dibia.

It listens. It reasons. It cuts through complexity. And increasingly, it acts.

No chickens. No eggs. No sacrifices required.

Just procurement.
